Heading to the Big Shop for the 7 a.m. shift

January 08, 2017

Amanda looks across the tracks, opposite the Stratford station. “There’s another engine, Wolfie.”

Nosing forward behind locomotive 5594 on the inbound passenger train is yard engine 7312. Angus gulps. He stares at the brakeman riding the steps on the back of the short coal tender. In another life—his real life in the second decade of the 21st century—he’s seen that very engine. It was down in the Pennsylvania Dutch country around Strasburg.

“They’re heading over to the Big Shop.”
