Welcome to the blog of Ian Wilson, author of the award-winning books on 1950s Canadian steam railway operations.

Steam, diesel, electric action from late 1940s to 1961

July 23, 2024

I've uploaded a preview of late 1940s to early 1960s railway movies.

There's a story behind this newly-digitized footage...

I had been intending to have the photo lab digitize Jim Guerin's movie footage which is being offered as an add-on to purchasers of Steam Encounters in the USA vol. 1. Instead, I had a variety of films from the late 1940s to the early 1960s processed! Meanwhile, Guerin's companion footage to Steam Encounters in the USA vol. 1 is now being digitized at the lab.

Anyhow, I still have more than 24 minutes of professionally-digitized 8mm railway movie footage on my hands...

Scenes include:

  • late 1940s New York Central and Pere Marquette in Ontario
  • mainline NYC action near Welland and Buffalo
  • late 1940s/early 1950s Canadian National and Canadian Pacific at Bayview
  • mid-1950s CNR, CPR and CP Electrics around Galt and Kitchener
  • CPR fan trips from 1960 (engines 136 and 815, the tripleheader, engines 1057 and 2414)
  • CNR Northern 6167 excursion debut 1960 plus a 1961 outing

I've decided to offer the full movie free of charge to purchasers of Steam Encounters in the USA vol. 1. When that volume ships in September, you'll get a link and password. Meanwhile...
