In early 2017, I began working on King's Highways & Steam Trains vol. 2, to continue the series which began with King's Highways & Steam Trains vol. 1. This would involve the Angus and Amanda characters again.
Around this time, I was still trying to gravitate young readers, who were upwards of two generations removed from the railway steam era in Canada, to our subject of interest. After lengthy consultation with a business coach, I concluded that it was best to keep the fiction and nonfiction separate. He encouraged me to offer something in the traditional mold to my long-time railway readers. Thus, I reconfigured my next title to the Steam Scenes of Stratford we now know. The title was released in May 2017.
I did bring an element of fiction into this title—a modern-day railfan finding himself back in the years 1953 and 1954 at Stratford, Ontario. This was the writing vehicle I had employed in Steam at Washago. To date, Steam Scenes of Stratford remains the last title I have produced with a time-travel overlay. The Speed Graphics and Steam and Encounters series' would follow.
