A preview of Steam Scenes of Northern Ontario

August 26, 2018

Here are some sample images from the upcoming Steam Scenes of Northern Ontario:

They span the three divisions and hundreds of miles from Toronto all the way to the north woods.

Even green-and-yellow diesels of the Canadian National and Ontario Northland are part of the mid-1950s story depicted in this 48-page supplement to Steam in Northern Ontario.

Mikados, Northerns, Mountains traverse the single-track mainline, shoulder-to-shoulder with workaday Consolidations, Pacifics and yard power.

All these locomotives and their trains stand out against the untamed wilderness of Ontario’s north.

Over the past week, I’ve made the photo selections for this volume. Layout and design of the volume will commence this week.

As for scheduling, both Steam Scenes of Northern Ontario and the Steam in Northern Ontario reprint will go to the printer toward the end of October.

As you know by now, we print and bind our books right here in Ontario—so you need not worry about overseas factory closings or unpleasant production surprises to impact delivery of the volumes you await.

A couple of weeks from now, we’ll launch our direct mail campaign for the two Northern Ontario releases (if you're not on our direct mail list and would like to be, send us an email with your address). But you need not wait until then to pre-order either volume. The “early birds” will receive their books first!

A copy of Steam Scenes of Northern Ontario is a complimentary enclosure with your order for the Steam in Northern Ontario hardcover. Or, you may purchase the softcover supplement separately. This page has order links for both options:

If you take advantage of our $69.95 offer for the two books, your savings will be more than $40 off the regular price of the pair. Or, save $7 or more on your pre-purchase of Steam Scenes of Northern Ontario only. Both offers expire October 31st.

A word about Steam in Northern Ontario—we’re spending extra time and effort to ensure that every photographic image in that long out-of-print volume leaps off the page! The improvements in production quality will be notable, given that the original printing did not benefit from the state-of-the-art press now at our disposal.

Please share this post (look for the various icons nearby to do that) with anyone you know with an interest in 1950s Canadian steam railway operations who would like a chance to pre-order one or both of the upcoming releases.
